5High quality coffee system that really delivers
By Matthew K. Morgan
I will start off with a statement about the price of this coffee system. The Miele CM5200 Coffee System is a very expensive and high-end coffee maker (selling for $2,500 as I write this). It's very definitely a coffee system for those who truly love their coffee, and it is designed for home use - it's not an office coffee maker unless we're talking about a small 2-4 person office. Could a coffee maker really cost that much and actually be worth the expense? Read on.People familiar with Miele recognize it as a company with a solid reputation for making expensive but exceptionally high-end consumer appliances that are built to last for years. I was very interested in trying the Miele CM5200 Coffee System and so far it has been absolutely amazing. I am fortunate to have a real coffee aficionado in the house - my teenage son, who already has formulated a strong opinion of what qualifies as "good coffee" and what doesn't. His reaction to this coffee system has been very favorable. This is no small coffee maker but it is not huge either. It is slightly larger than my KitchenAid mixer with which it now shares counter space. I had a difficult time judging the size from the description and pictures, and when it arrived it was smaller than I envisioned. This is good - it can find a home in the kitchen unless there is literally no space at all.My first order of business was to unpack the machine, set it on the counter and then read the owner's manual. I very strongly recommend this to everyone for this machine - there are a lot of features and though it's tempting to just plug it in and turn it on it's better to know how it works. The manual is well written and it explains everything you need to know about the coffee system - assembly, use, maintenance and troubleshooting. One detail that should not be ignored - the bean grinder gets tested before it leaves the factory and the manual recommends flushing the system. Sure enough, when I pulled the grinder assembly out for cleaning there was a small amount of residue in the chamber and it needed to be cleaned out. At first this really bothered me, but when I thought about it I realized that this means it's very unlikely to get a dud unit on arrival.Initial configuration of the electronics is fairly straightforward. When powered on it prompts for language and time. Oddly enough, I have not figured out how to get the panel to actually display the time. To get into detailed configuration, hold down the "Ok" button to change settings such as coffee strength and temperature, start a cleaning cycle and more. The manual explains all of this but most settings are very self explanatory. This is a whole-bean system and the machine is very capable of grinding beans with one touch. It is more quiet than I expected when doing this task. It will also take pre-ground coffee but I do not recommend this - use whole beans to get fresher, more fragrant and more flavorful coffee. The bean chute holds approximately half a pound of beans at a time, where the pre-ground chute holds exactly one scoop. We have tried both whole beans and pre-ground coffee and the difference in the result was huge - using whole beans definitely resulted in the better cup every time. This coffee system makes four drink types in two sizes. It makes regular black coffee, espresso, cappuccino and latte, and it can make single and double servings (or two cups at once). Selection of the drink type is easy as each drink type has a dedicated button, and when selecting the type a double-push of a button gets a double-portion. It could not be easier. My son commented that it's like having a coffee shop in the kitchen. We have spent some time making the different types of drinks from this machine and so far all have turned out as expected - excellent. My son likes straight coffee as well as his lattes, and I made for him a latte this evening. He responded that it was absolutely the best coffee he had ever had (so far). From him, that's high praise. One accessory that comes with the coffee system is a milk chamber for making cappuccinos or lattes, and the claim is that it will keep milk cold for up to 12 hours. I am skeptical, though the chamber is definitely double walled so it will keep milk cold for a while and it is very convenient. It is not necessary to use the chamber though - it is easy enough to use the hose attachment to draw the milk from a cup or glass or straight from the carton. The absolute best feature of this machine, to me, is that it is fully capable of flushing and cleaning itself. When powered off, the system initiates a rinse cycle and cleans itself neatly, flushing out the works into the drip chamber which can be slid out and washed by hand. It has a program for flushing the milk dispenser too, which is a very good feature so that curdled milk will not build up in the system. The machine also has a cup warmer, but we do not use that.Compared to "normal" coffee makers, this machine has very low daily maintenance - it makes one cup at a time, it cleans itself, it does not make a huge mess, and there is no pot to clean at the end of the day. There is a cleaning schedule outlined in the manual, but it's easy maintenance that does not require a huge investment of time. The Miele CM5200 Coffee System is a very high-end counter top coffee system. It comes with a high price tag, but it makes exceptional coffee (as long as you use quality coffee - if you use bad coffee beans or grounds, do not expect to get a great cup of coffee), it's easy to use and is easy to maintain. It makes several drink types and it cleans up after itself. And, it's built to last (the claim is 50,000 cups of coffee over 20 years). It requires a serious investment and a true love of coffee, but this system is worth its asking price if you want the very best in coffee systems and you want excellently brewed coffee without a run to a boutique coffee shop.

5A Refined Experience
By J. Finkel
Miele's CM5200 is a high-end coffee system that automatically brews espresso, coffee, cappuccino, macchiato, and cafe latte. You can also dispense hot water or hot milk. The machine accepts whole beans or ground coffee and is equipped with a removable water reservoir (no direct line), frother, cup warmer and milk flask. Cleaning is relatively easy and a decent list of optional settings round out this excellent coffee system. Overall, this machine produces outstanding results with minimal effort in minimal time.== Ease of Use ==The Miele CM5200 is a complex machine with many features, but it manages to provide a simple and efficient interface. The steps to brew most of the drinks goes: power on, wait ~ 2 minutes for rinsing and heating, meanwhile fill water and coffee bean grinder, insert cup, press appropriate drink button once per serving, wait ~30-60 seconds per serving. The CM5200 will rinse the main tubes and the milk tube (used for cappuccino, macchiato and latte) as appropriate automatically. A brush is provided for scrubbing if needed, but I have not needed it so far. There is a cleaning schedule in the manual that involves cleaning out the drip tray and waste bin at the end of each day though if it gets full, the machine will display a message to clean the tray. The only hassle is descaling the machine with special tablets (2 included) but that only needs to be done once every 3 months or so depending on use and water hardness. The dispenser raises up or lowers by hand to accommodate tea cups, coffee mugs and many normal glasses, though it will not fit most travel mugs. Other than that my only gripe is the lack of a dedicated 'back' button for the menus.== Functionality ==Everything that comes out of the CM5200 is far superior to what I can get out of my burr grinder and basic drip machine or french press. The most immediately noticeable difference is the crema, which adds a lot of body and smoothness to coffee. While the effects will vary based upon the beans and settings, generally coffee brewed with the CM5200 has much more flavor and body than other brewing methods without adding any off flavors. While I have not owned any similar high-end systems, the CM5200 produces coffee, espresso and cappuccino almost on par with the best I have had in restaurants. You will certainly have to tweak the settings of the machine to get the best results for some coffee beans. The speed at which you can brew several different drinks is also impressive and the noise is not bad - much quieter than my bodum burr grinder.== Features ==There are many features that help you customize your drinks to just the way you want. The CM5200 allows you to set strength (amount of beans used per serving) individually for each drink and saves these settings. The default strength is normal and you can adjust this up to strong or down to weak. You can also set the volume of liquid brewed per serving precisely (you select the option and then press a button at the moment you wish to stop brewing). Together these two control give you a lot of flexibility. You also have the option to pre-brew (set off by default), which moistens the grounds prior to brewing so that the grounds get saturated and react more uniformly during the brewing. The cup warmer is a nice feature. It is not so useful if you put your CM5200 underneath wooden cabinets, though the machine is light enough to move when company is over. There is a timer so you can have the machine warmed up for you in the morning, but the warm-up phase is so short that I would never bother.

UPDATE: Lately this machine is having an issue. For instance, it will read "Rinse Milk System" and when I push the "OK" button it goes back to drink menu, instead of cleaning. This has been happening frequently, but still love the machine. The Miele CM5200 is a sleek modern machine, that easily provides delicious high quality coffee drinks. It's not huge, but it definitely takes up quite a bit of room on my kitchen counter. The machine was practically ready right out of the box. You have to wash a few items, plug in a tube and run the rinse cycle and it's ready to go!The display window walks you through what you need to do from maintenance, language choice, clock, and hard water selection. I did the recommended rinse cycle, then read over the booklet before I attempted to try the machine. It's a good thing too, because I would've washed the brew unit with dish soap and that's a big no-no. A test strip is provided so you can figure out the hardness of your water and set it accordingly on the coffee system.I love lattes and cappuccinos, but thought I would try a basic cup of coffee first. The coffee was prepared easily. The machine intimated me at first, but once I made the first cappuccino, I was fine. The cylinder that holds the half and half was easy to "plug" in to the machine and in seconds I had a delicious hot cappuccino just like Starbucks would make! I even ran out to buy a couple of syrups to try with it.It's fairly quiet for this type of system. I recommend getting whole beans for the coffee. They grind quickly and you have a choice of grinder settings. Miele thought of everything for this machine and it shows. Excellent! Highly recommended.I'll update when it's time to descale/clean it.Pros:-Self cleaning-Relatively quiet-Easy instructions-Great results-Sliding Spout to accommodate different cup heights-Easy to take out parts that are cleaned by hand-Extras: Milk container, cleaning tabs, descaling tabs, test strip for water hardness, cleaning brush for milk tubeCons:-A little large, but totally worth it-You can't use coffee that has been treated with sugar or carmel.
